Three True Stories Worth Reading

I’ve spent hours reading, perhaps making up for chemotherapy days when I couldn’t focus and, true, some books I sent to Goodwill, a few I tossed, not wanting anyone else to waste their time, but several books greatly influenced my life. So when pondering difficulties, an uncertain future, and a shaky society, we can find encouragement from these three old, but awesome true stories.

The first book is Evidence Not Seen, a Woman’s Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of WWII. Written by Darlene Rose around 1988, it’s a true story of a young American missionary’s courage in the jungles of New Guinea. She spent four years in a Japanese prison camp. She was forced to sign a confession to a crime she did not commit and face the executioner’s sword.

Rose writes about her death sentence: “All time froze around me. All motion and life were suspended in that moment. In terror I watched the man’s hand fold around the hilt of the sword.” But in the midst of Rose’s terror comes a song from the Almighty God, “I’ll live for Him Who died for me!” Can you imagine how much Rose praised God when at the last minute she received a stay of exeucution? She was miraculously spared?

I agree with Ruth Bell Graham’s comment, “My life was changed when I heard Darlene Rose’s story. It challenged my faith as nothing else had.” So I learned that in the midst of trials, even when our life is at stake, God will be with us.

The second book I read with fascination was Of Whom the World was Not Worthy by Marie Chapian.  It’s old, written in 1978, but this was the first time I read it.

“Jakob, the evangelist, shouted as the German tanks roared across Yugoslavian soil, and machine guns, motorcycles and Messerschmitts screamed in the hills. Out of the sky came the Stukas. They nosed over, dropped their bombs and veered off into the cold blue. The wagon in front of them was hit. The donkey was dead, and the driver lay mutilated in the brush at the side of the road.

In the midst of this living hell, believers clung to God and prayed for both friend and foe. Their enemies could burn their cities and towns, but they could not destroy their souls or quench their indomitable spirits.”

How were these Christians’ faith sustained through the terrible years of war, famine and cold? They clung to God with an incredible faith.

The last book I’ll mention is I Dared to Call him Father by Bilquis Sheikh. It is the fascinating true story of a prominent Muslim woman. Her journey to a personal relationship with God turned her world upside down and put her life in danger. Originally published in 1978, the book is a classic in Muslim evangelism. When Sheikh’s life was threatened, she stayed steadfast and strong in her faith. My favorite book of the three and definitely, a book everyone should read.

So now I’ve shared three books that can help increase your faith in God. It’s always uplifting to read how God works in an ordinary person’s life to help sustain them through trials.

You are loved,

Kathryn

Cancer: Feeling clean again

The Lord has been good! The two biopsies I took last week came back negative. No cancer! Also no cancer on the leg. All of me checked out clean, clean, clean. In fact, the doctor said I didn’t need to see him again for six months! That’s makes me feel like running a marathon. Well, maybe later.

The liver biopsy almost did me in. It hurt more than I expected for longer than I expected, so I am still recovering. Doc said it is probably a hematoma (bruise) from the laparoscopic biopsy that will take a bit longer to heal.

With the good news, I can now focus on improving my overall health. I lost a few more pounds. It seems that I lost a few pounds every time something came up, and something was always coming up. 🙂 Maybe the surprises are over. I can’t afford to lose any more weight. Now I have to figure out how to gain weight. Never thought I would have that problem! For once, I don’t think I will mind being a few pounds overweight as long as I am healthy. Made me look at weight a little differently.

I’ve been eating soft foods because of the digestive system inflammation side effect from radiation. Like potato soup with cream in it, boiled eggs with lots of butter, and added protein to smoothies. Whatever is easy to digest, has no sugar, and is fattening, I’m willing to try. Got any ideas on how to put on weight?

I knew for certain that God would heal me from cancer. How? Well, it dawned on me that either he would heal my body, or he would take me home to be with him where there is no cancer. Either way, I would be healed.

However, now it’s possible I may actually run that marathon some day.

Thank you so much for all your prayers. I know they made a difference. God encourages us to: “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” Psalm 31:24. And I certainly put my hope in him.

Health issues make us pray more

It takes time to recover from cancer and sometimes little things crop back up like health issues that must be dealt with. I have been feeling well after chemo/radiation, but have several concerns. I don’t want to worry you about them, but then, I’ve tried to be open about my issues and prayer needs, no matter how embarrassing or personal. You form my primary prayer and support group.

First, I don’t think I could have made it this far without your support. It has been amazing. I love you all very much. Here is what is going on.

 1)     The surgery on my leg for skin cancer has almost healed, but there is one tiny spot that has popped up. I must get this checked.

2)     I spent three days in the hospital last week for partial bowel obstruction, maybe a side effect of the radiation. I’m okay now, but another one of things I need to follow up on.

3)     I missed an appointment to have a biopsy done on the original anal cell cancer site so I have to reschedule. A small lesion remains and hopefully it is scar tissue, but we don’t know.

4) I lost weight through this (although I seem to have an appetite) and I can’t seem to regain the weight. I try to eat healthy although a pepperoni pizza looks pretty good right now and it’s the middle of the night!

Our International ministry has been such a blessing! It has certainly been a fruitful year with new workers, many people saved, etc. God has been so evident!

As I recently read Psalms from the New Living Translation (NLT), I read “Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.” Psalm 33:22. The word “unfailing love” caused me to stop and ponder. And to thank Him for being with me the last six months. Then I noticed the word again in another chapter – “unfailing love.” It is written 72 times in the NLT! I really needed to be reminded that God’s love never, ever fails. How awesome!

I feel bad about asking for your prayers, after so many of you have prayed for me for so long, and considering the many prayer needs you have. But please, if God bring it to mind, remember my health concerns. It makes a big difference. I have certainly felt God with me through this.

Praise God, the skin cancer is gone!

Surgery went well. The skin cancer is gone. We got to the surgery center at 7:30 a.m. and left about noon. The doc did a MOHS surgery, where they cut a hole in my leg and tested the edges for cancer. We waited and then they cut a little more. Then it all tested clean!  It’s amazing that it only took two times to get it all. (With the leg pain I had, I was afraid they would have to cut off my leg! Mr. Bill only laughed at me.  🙂

Awake during the surgery, I sang my favorite Jesus hymn songs in my head. So glad I had practiced during radiation/chemo therapy. I like Psalm 101:1 “I will sing of your love and justice to you. O Lord, I will sing praise.”

The cut was about a 2 inch circular area and the doc was able to stitch it up without any skin grafts. (Another of my concerns.) Mr. Bill took pictures if you want to see, but believe me, they are yucky.  No skin graft was good news and an answer to prayers. It will heal quicker without a graft. I may have a funny looking scar on my leg but that will only remind me of what God has done for me.

Several other people sat in the surgery waiting room with us, all for the MOHS skin surgery. Most were older and had bandages on their nose, forehead, or cheeks. So here’s my warning. Stay out of the sun or wear sunscreen, or you too will be dealing with this skin cancer stuff someday.

Aunt Frances’ surgery went well too. The doc removed the bad spots on the bladder seen on earlier scans and she is doing fine. They kept her in the hospital all night to watch her. We haven’t heard back about the biopsy, but I know God will take care of her.

Now I am sitting with an ice pack on my leg and will have to keep it elevated for a week or two. Also I’m wondering why I was so worried. God takes us through the tough days with compassion and concern. He promises to stay beside us and I am so grateful He did.

Does God allow cancer a second time?

I’m overwhelmed by people’s care after finding out my cancer was gone! But we have one more unexpected hurdle this week. I thought I had an infected bug bite on my right lower leg and went to the doctor to get it checked out two weeks ago. Antibiotics didn’t help so the sore was biopsied. It is skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). The operation to take it off will be Tuesday, April 16th. The same day, my great Aunt Frances will have an operation for bladder cancer (she’s 86 years old).

I was upset at first, it hurts and has been there two months, and I am tired of medical problems. But God has done great things for me already. He brought people in person to pray for me. My writing friends prayed, a doctor prayed, my sweet sisters prayed, my cousin who is a pastor visited me and prayed, the elders of our church prayed Sunday morning.

Prayer is a powerful tool. God hears and He answered those prayers. He brought me relief, rest, and peace. Now I’m asking for you to pray again this week, especially for Tuesday (and maybe for my recovery) and for Aunt Frances, and my mom who will be taking care of her. I am simply amazed at the awesome group of kindhearted loving people who surround me.

I have been reading Psalm 103. Praise the Lord, Oh my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who also forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

God healed my body after the first cancer, not because I deserved it, but because he is merciful to me in spite of my weaknesses and sin. And because you prayed. Thank you. That’s helps me to trust Him now.
